Day School Director Job Description

Day School Director Search Committee Update

After many years of faithful service to St. Aidan’s Day School, our current director, Kathy Hoke, has announced her retirement.  Kathy will continue as Director throughout this school year, and we are working to have a new Director in place before the school opens in Fall 2010.  In June, a committee of interested parents and teachers from the Day School and Church were named to oversee the search process:

In an effort to keep the community apprised of our efforts, we have created this web page to provide periodic updates on the search process.  If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to contact one of the committee members listed below.

The Search Committee first met in July 2009.  At that meeting, we developed a draft timeline for our work.  We decided to begin the process by creating three different surveys to send to Day School families, Day School staff, and Church members to allow the committee to better understand the community’s needs and concerns as we begin to search for a new Director.

At a second meeting in July, we reviewed and edited the draft surveys and discussed the how to distribute the surveys and compile the results.

In August 2009, the Committee met and determined to use the online tool “Survey Monkey” to send the three surveys.  We made final edits and changes to the surveys and planned to send them to Day School parents, faculty, and Church members on September 15 with a deadline of September 30 for responses.  At this meeting we also discussed feedback from Kathy Hoke as well as a couple past Day School Directors concerning what they felt to be the challenges of the job and the important attributes for a Director.

In September 2009, the Committee met to begin reviewing the initial responses from the three surveys.  We were impressed with the thoughtfulness and care with which the surveys were completed.  We also began to discuss the job description for the Director position.  We began to discuss other preschools in the area.  We discussed a time frame for advertising, interviewing and hiring a Director and created a loose time line to follow in the coming months.  We hope to have finalized the job description so that we can post the open position in January and begin interviews in February.

In early November 2009, the Committee met to review synopses of the three surveys.  (The Survey Synopses can be found here.)  We also discussed practices of other area preschools with whom we have had conversations.  We began to craft the job description for the Director position and discussed the next steps in preparing to post the job opening in various communities and publications.  We hope to have a draft of the job description and a blurb for job postings finished in the next few weeks so that the Church Vestry and Day School Board can see them before they are posted in January.

In early January 2010, the Committee met and finalized the Director job description.  The description will be added to the website and we will begin disseminating the description and soliciting resumes.  We will also be posting synopses of the responses to the parent, teacher and parishioner surveys on the web site.

In mid-February 2010, the Committee met and reviewed all resumes and cover letters received from applicants for the Day School Director position.  We received almost 30 resumes from many well-qualified candidates.  We have narrowed down the applicants and selected people to ask for a first round of interviews which we hope will begin in late February and end by mid-March.
